In 1986, the 99th U.S. Congress pased the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area Act. I was too young to know what any of it meant but I felt the outcry and anger in the community, and I sensed the fear that permeated. I grew up hearing it called the "fucking Gorge Act" by all but a few.
